Commissioning of an IQF freezing plant equipped with an OctoFrost 8/2 tunnel

Commissioning of an IQF freezing plant equipped with an OctoFrost 8/2 tunnel, designed to freeze avocado, strawberries, mangoes, grapes, blueberries, beans, pineapple and other products in a range of presentations and formats, is the stage at which everything that has been designed, calculated, constructed and installed is finally verified under actual operating conditions. Commissioning involves confirming that all auxiliary and utility systems operate sequentially, in a coordinated manner and as an integrated system, including the availability of electrical power to meet the calculated load demand, compressed air at 8 bar and at the required optimum dew point, pressurised water at 8 bar, and all other utilities required by the equipment. At the same time, the industrial ammonia (NH₃) refrigeration system must achieve the required operating pressures and temperatures to provide the refrigeration capacity demanded by the OctoFrost evaporator. This is the point at which engineering calculations, refrigeration loads, flow rates, pressures, temperatures, power requirements and pipe sizing cease to be merely design values and are validated directly in the field. It is also essential to verify that the P&IDs, plant layouts, mechanical drawings, electrical drawings and automation and control documentation accurately reflect the systems as actually installed. Only when the electrical supply, pressurised water, compressed air, refrigeration system, controls and IQF tunnel operate correctly together as one integrated system can the plant be considered fully operational. Ultimately, commissioning is the practical demonstration that the engineering developed throughout the project performs as intended under real operating conditions.
