El sistema estructural canaliza todos los esfuerzos exteriores que actúan sobre los cerramientos y coberturas de la estructura(viento, lluvia, efectos sísmicos, variaciones térmicas, etc.), así como los esfuerzos interiores que pueden producir las máquinas que realizan el proceso de fabricación, los sistemas de transporte ,los pesos de las materias primas, productos semielaborados, productos terminados, puentes-grúa ,sistema contraincendios, instalaciones auxiliares, etc. El sistema estructural soporta y transmite los citados esfuerzos a las cimentaciones, las cuales a su vez al suelo.
